Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has advised Myanmar’s military rulers to start talks with their opponents. China has taken this initiative amid escalating violence in Myanmar and deteriorating human rights. This is the first Chinese foreign minister’s visit to Myanmar since the military coup on February 1 last year.
After the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Myanmar in 2020, such a senior Chinese official came here for the first time. During his visit in 2020, Xi also met with Myanmar’s army chief Min Aung Halayang. Min is now the ruler of the country.
According to the details published on the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang said- ‘We encourage all parties in Myanmar to start political dialogue within the constitutional and legal framework of their country, so that the process of democratic change in the country can be resumed.
At the same time, Wang reiterated China’s support for maintaining political and social stability in Myanmar. But he said- ‘China is closely monitoring the situation in Myanmar and will continue to play a constructive role on its part’. for’ China praised.
Lankang-Mikong Cooperation Framework established in 2015:
Wang arrived in Myanmar’s tourist city of Bagan on Sunday. He came here to participate in the meeting of foreign ministers of several countries being held here under the Lankang-Mikong Cooperation Framework. The foreign ministers of Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam also participated in this meeting. It was here that he held bilateral talks with the Foreign Minister of Myanmar.
Myanmar’s military regime has projected this meeting as one of its diplomatic victories. Jaw-Min-Tun, spokesman for the military regime, told reporters – this meeting is proof of the sovereignty of Myanmar and the recognition its government is getting.
According to the website NikkeaAsia.com, the Lankang-Mikong Cooperation Framework was formed in 2015 at the initiative of China. Its purpose is to advance multilateral dialogue in infrastructure construction and other areas. It is named after the longest river in Southeast Asia. The part of this river located in China is called Lankang and. In other countries it is called Mikong.
Does China want mediation?
China’s statement issued after Wang’s talks with Myanmar’s foreign minister has been deemed important. China is the largest ally of Myanmar. It refused to condemn the military coup in 2021. In April this year, it reiterated its support for the military rulers. In such a situation, it is understood that it will be difficult for the military regime to completely reject the advice of China.
Ian Chong, a professor of political science at the National University of Singapore, told American TV channel CNN- ‘China’s interest is in maintaining political stability in Myanmar. In such a situation, I think China is trying to mediate there, so that military rule can get some legitimacy. But there is doubt that this will bring any change in the behavior of the military rulers.
