0 India China Talk: India-China 16th round of meeting today on Ladakh border dispute

The 16th round of commander-level meeting between India and China is going to be held on Sunday on the issue of tension on the Ladakh border. It is expected that India will put pressure on all remaining friction points to withdraw troops at the earliest, apart from resolving the issues at Depsang and Demchok.

India has been pressing for an early withdrawal of troops from all friction points in eastern Ladakh, stressing that peace along the border is a necessary condition for progress in bilateral ties.

Xi Jinping visits Xinjiang:

A day earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Xinjiang and met with his troops. This assumes significance as the Xinjiang Military Command of the People’s Liberation Amy (PLA) has been overseeing the India-China border in the Ladakh region since May 2020 amid a military standoff between the two sides. His meeting with Chinese troops in Xinjiang comes ahead of the 16th round of military talks between India and China on Sunday.

The issue of dispute related to eastern Ladakh figured prominently in talks held in Bali between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi last week. In an hour-long meeting in Bali on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ conference, Jaishankar had conveyed to Yi the need for early resolution of all pending issues in eastern Ladakh.

He also said that relations between the two countries should be based on mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interests. Violent clashes took place on 5 May 2020:

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the process of separation in the northern and southern shores of Pangong Lake and the Gogra region last year.

The border dispute in eastern Ladakh started after a violent clash between the armies of India and China in the Pangong Lake area on 5 May 2020. Since then, both countries have deployed 50,000 to 60,000 soldiers with heavy weapons.
