India has made a great start in boxing in the Commonwealth Games. Indian boxer Shiv Thapa easily defeated Suleiman Baloch of Pakistan in the first round match of 63.5 kg weight category on Friday. The 28-year-old Thapa defeated Suleman 5-0 in the round of 32 match. With this, Shiv Thapa entered the pre-quarterfinals of the light welter weight category.
Five-time Asian Championship medalist Thapa was technically better than Baloch as he unleashed a flurry of punches on his opponent. Not only this, Thapa also made good use of the defense and swung the Pakistani boxer around the ring. At one point, Sulaiman went ahead to punch Shiv Thapa, but Thapa easily went out of the way and the Pakistan boxer fell to the canvas.
India has high hopes from Shiv Thapa this year. Shiva was only 18 when he qualified for the 2012 Olympics. He became the youngest boxer from India to qualify for the Olympics. By the time he was 22, Thapa had become a two-time Olympian and an Arjuna Awardee. Shiva won the bronze medal in the bantamweight category at the 2015 Doha World Championships.
