Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu has won India’s first gold at the Commonwealth Games 2022. He won the gold medal in the weightlifting 49 kg category.
Apart from this, Mirabai has also created a new history in the Commonwealth Games. He also holds the record for lifting the most weight in the snatch round. Mirabai lifted the highest weight of 88 kg in the snatch round and 113 kg in the clean and jerk round. He lifted a total weight of 201 kg.
Mirabai sets record in snatch round:
Mirabai lifted a weight of 84 kg in the first attempt in the snatch round. Mirabai had also made her first attempt in the snatch round in the Tokyo Olympics in 84 kg. In the second attempt, Meera thought of lifting a weight of 88 kg and did so. With the lifting of this weight, Mirabai created history.
This is the highest weight lifted by a female athlete in the snatch round in Commonwealth Games history. Along with this, Mirabai also equaled her personal best. Meera has lifted 88 kg at the national level. Chanu’s personal best performance in 49kg is a total of 203kg (snatch: 88kg, clean and jerk: 115kg), which she made at the 2020 National Championships in February.
However, Mirabai’s third attempt failed. In the third attempt, Meera thought of lifting 90 kg, but she lost her balance and she failed. In the Tokyo Olympics, Meera had tried to lift 89 kg in her third attempt, but she failed in that too. However, despite not being able to lift 90 kg, Meera topped the snatch round. He maintained a 12 kg weight lead over the second placed weightlifter.
Mirabai Chanu lifted 109 kg in the first round of clean and jerk. He also won the gold medal with this, as no one was close to him. However, even after this, he made a second attempt and lifted a weight of 113 kg. In the third attempt, Mirabai tried to lift a weight of 115 kg, but failed. His weight of 115 kg is best in clean and jerk.
Got the country an Olympic medal in weightlifting after 21 years:
Mirabai had given the country an Olympic medal in weightlifting last year after 21 years. In the Tokyo Olympics, Meera lifted a total of 202 kg in the 49 kg weight category and won a silver medal. Karnam Malleswari won a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics before him. Mirabai has been winning medals in three consecutive Commonwealth Games. Meera won a silver medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and a gold medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
She failed in Rio Olympics in 2016:
Mirabai has never looked back since missing out on a medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and continues to carry the flag of success. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Mirabai was unable to lift the weight properly in any of her attempts. His every attempt was disqualified. In 2016, when Meera could not lift weights, her name was written – ‘Did not finish’.
Mirabai Chanu went into depression too:
This ‘did not finish’ tag broke Meera’s morale. Due to this defeat, Meera went into depression. Not only this, Meera had to take the help of a doctor to get out of it. He had also made up his mind to say goodbye to weightlifting. However, the urge to prove herself did not allow Meera to do so. Since then Meera emerged as the new icon of the country.
Meera won the gold medal in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships. She was the first Indian athlete to do so. She had also left her real sister’s wedding to prepare for this event. After winning a medal in the World Weightlifting Championship, Meera started crying. He remembered the 2016 defeat even at that time. Meera then went on to win gold at the last Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. In this way she became the best athlete in the country.
Four medals for India so far in Birmingham:
In the last edition of the Commonwealth Games, Indian weightlifters had won nine medals, including five gold. This time India has got four medals so far in weightlifting in Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Before Mirabai, Sanket Sargar won silver medal in 55 kg weightlifting and Gururaja Pujari won bronze medal in 61 kg weightlifting. At the same time, Bindiyarani Devi won the silver medal.
