With less than 48 hours to go for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, six members of the Indian women’s cricket team are yet to get UK visas. Women’s cricket has been included in the Commonwealth Games for the first time.
Team India is currently training in Bangalore. He is to leave for Birmingham on Sunday. The BCCI is in touch with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) regarding this matter.
An IOA source told news agency PTI, “Some visas were received today, but six visas are yet to be received. These include three players and three support staff. The rest of the visas should arrive by tomorrow. Anyway, we have no control in this process. It is busy due to summer and it is taking time to get UK visa.
Harmanpreet Kaur will captain:
The Indian women’s cricket team was announced on July 11. Haranpreet Kaur will captain India. Cricket has returned after 24 years in this tournament. The last time cricket was a part of it was in 1998. This time only women’s teams will participate in the Commonwealth Games. Edgbaston, famous for Test cricket, will have cricket matches. Eight teams will appear in the tournament.
India’s first match against Australia:
India are in Group A with Australia, Barbados and Pakistan. Sri Lanka, England, New Zealand and South Africa have been placed in Group B. Team India will start its campaign against Australia on 29 July. The top two teams from both the groups will advance to the semi-finals.
215 players from India will go to Birmingham:
The Indian women’s cricket team is part of a 215-member squad that the country will send to Birmingham for the Games. The team consists of 108 men and 107 women. The total members will be 322. These include 72 team officers, 26 additional officers, nine casual staff and three general managers.
South Africa won gold:
This time in the Commonwealth Games, 19 sports will be thrilled. Cricket was last seen at the Kuala Lumpur Games. Then 50 over matches were played. Only men’s teams took part. During that time 16 teams took part. Legendary players like Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis took part in the tournament. South Africa won gold, Australia silver and New Zealand bronze.

Standby players: Simran Dil Bahadur, Richa Ghosh, Poonam Yadav.
