0 Delhi is becoming the center of organ trade, new racket surfaced every third year

With the number of kidney, liver and heart failure patients increasing every year and the lack of adequate organ donation, the national capital Delhi is becoming a hub of organ trade. This is also because Delhi Police has been successful in catching a new kidney racket thrice during the last six years.

In all these three cases, apart from the big private hospital, its staff, doctors and outside touts, the lower class families of the victims are from neighboring states. One reason behind this is believed to be high demand for transplantation and less organ donation, while the Human Organ Transplantation Act 1994 is considering the need to make the provisions of the law more stringent.

Actually, two days ago, Delhi Police had exposed the kidney racket, in which 10 people were caught. However, earlier in the year 2016 and 2019, kidney racket has been exposed in Delhi. Delhi Police has arrested more than 30 people in these cases. These include four doctors from big private hospitals in Delhi.

A police official said that Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab have played a role in these cases, but all the transplants have been done in big private hospitals in Delhi. “Private hospitals have access to lawyers and officials. Every time hospitals are saved because the accused doctors are not permanent staff there and their support staff are personally appointed.

Another AIIMS doctor said the trade would continue till the gap between the demand and supply of organs is bridged. According to the Union Health Ministry, there is a huge gap between the demand and supply of human organs for transplantation.

If we understand this situation through statistics, then two lakh patients need to undergo kidney transplant annually, but except in the year 2017, kidney transplantation has not happened more than three thousand.

Similarly, against the demand of 30 thousand livers, only 1500 are available in the country and against the demand of 50 thousand hearts, only 15 are available in the country. According to the Mohan Foundation of Chennai, which works on organ donation, only three per cent of patients in the country undergo transplant every year.

Three years 250 brain dead, organ donation only 10-

According to an AIIMS study, about 1500 out of 10 lakh people in India have chronic kidney disease. Also, about 350 to 400 patients per 10 lakh population have kidney failure. Similarly, a 2018 AIIMS study published in the Indian Journal of Anesthesia found that 205 patients were declared brain dead at their trauma center between 2014 and 2017, but families of only 10 of these donated organs.

Those who need organs, not even their registry: Cases of kidney, liver and heart failure are increasing very fast every year in India. This has also led to increased demand for transplants, but there is no national registry of patients waiting for organs.

If the current situation is known, then the government has only an estimate that three to three and a half lakh patients need kidney, liver or heart transplant.

Understand the difference between demand and supply in Delhi like this-

  • So far, 20757 organ transplants have been done in Delhi in which one donor was a living person, while 714 organs were donated for the transplant.
  • Of the 20,757 organs, 14390 were donated by close relatives, while 6367 others donated them. Who were these people? No information about them.
  • Delhi has the highest number of transplants of male patients. So far, 4089 female patients have been transplanted against 17382 males.
