0 BRICS Summit: Indian Ambassador Pradeep Rawat meets Chinese Foreign Minister

Indian Ambassador to China Pradeep Kumar Rawat met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi ahead of the BRICS summit. He emphasized the seriousness of maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas to realize the full potential of the consensus between the top leaders of the two countries.

Rawat made a courtesy call on Wang at the Diaoyutai State Guest House here on Wednesday. This was his first meeting with the Chinese foreign minister after taking over as India’s new envoy to Beijing in March. A press release issued by the Indian Embassy here said bilateral and multilateral issues of interest to both sides were raised during the talks between Rawat and Wang.

Wang Yi pointed out that the highest levels of leadership of the two countries have agreed on the importance of bilateral relations for Asia and the world. The ambassadors agreed and stressed the need to maintain peace in the border areas to realize the full potential of this consensus. Wang Yi said that the border issue is important and we must resolve it peacefully through dialogue and coordination, the statement said.

Wednesday’s meeting assumes significance as it comes ahead of the virtual BRICS summit hosted by President Xi Jinping on Thursday in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participate. The meeting assumes significance as bilateral ties continue to sour over the two-year military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

As a result of military-level talks, the two sides last year completed the process of separation in the northern and southern banks of Pangong Lake and the Gogra region. India has consistently recognized that peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is vital for the overall development of bilateral relations.
