In Assam, rivers are in spate due to heavy rains and the situation has worsened due to floods, affecting 18.95 lakh people in 2,930 villages in 28 districts of the state. So far this year, 55 people have died in the state due to floods and landslides. Three children went missing while 21 people were rescued when a boat carrying flood-affected people sank in Hojai late on Friday.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this morning Prime Minister Narendra Modi called me to inquire about the flood situation in Assam. Sarma tweeted, “Grateful for his assurance and generosity. He expressed concern over the hardship being faced by the people due to this natural calamity and the PM has assured all possible help to the state.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a yellow alert was issued in the state on Saturday. Around 1.08 lakh people are taking shelter in 373 relief camps in the state. In the last 24 hours, landslides were reported in Dima Hasau, Gwalpara, Morigaon, Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) districts.
At the same time, the situation is worse in Nalbari district of lower Assam. Here 1.23 lakh people have been affected due to floods. 203 villages are completely submerged in West Nalbari, Ghogapar, Barbhag, Nalbari, Tihu, Barkhetri revenue circle.
Trains partially canceled:
In view of the continuous rise in the water level of the rivers and the flood situation, the Railway Department has partially canceled the trains running from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.
Army took command of relief-rescue operation:
The Army’s Gajraj Corps has started flood relief operations in collaboration with the local administration from Thursday. The campaign is being conducted by the army in Baksa, Nalbari, Darang, Tamulpur, Hojai and Kamrup.
NA-15 submerged, 13 embankments broken-
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), NH-15 has been submerged due to floods in Sipajhar area of Darrang district. Hundreds of trucks are stuck due to the closure of traffic on the highway. So far 13 embankments have been breached, while 64 roads and a bridge have been damaged due to rain and floods in the state.
Many rivers including Brahmaputra, Kapili are in spate:
In a bulletin issued by the Central Water Commission (CWC) on Saturday, it has been told that the Kapili river is in spate in Nagaon district. At the same time, water of Brahmaputra, Jia Bharali, Puthimari, Manas, Beki, Barak and Kushiara rivers are flowing above the danger mark. 43,338 hectares of agricultural land is submerged in the state.
