The petition to open 20 rooms in the basement of the Taj Mahal is to be heard in the High Court on Thursday, but the basement has been open several times for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the country’s renowned institutions. To test the strength of the Taj Mahal, it has been surveyed from time to time by going to the basement.
The ASI had preserved the basement 16 years ago, but to test its strength, a survey was conducted by the National Geographic Research Institute and the University of Roorkee in the year 1993, in which the basement wall of the Taj Mahal was said to be three meters thick and the main dome was similar to the original tombs.
The bottom part was said to be solid. The University of Roorkee used electrical, magnetic profiling techniques, shear web studies and gravity and geo radar techniques in this survey.
The Earthquake Engineering Department of the University of Roorkee conducted a survey in 1993 for the impact of the earthquake on the Taj Mahal. Project No. P-553A report was released in July 1993.
This survey was done to assess the extent of damage to the Taj Mahal in the event of future earthquakes. For this, the cellars of the Taj Mahal were opened, in which the strength of the walls of the domes, minarets, cellars were checked.
The foundations of Taj and Mahtab Bagh are 13 meters deep-
The National Geographical Research Institute conducted a simultaneous survey of the Mahtab Bagh and the Taj Mahal, in which magnetic profiling techniques were used to reveal that no structures were found in the foundations other than the known parts of the Taj Mahal and Mahtab Bagh.
Bore holes were drilled on the foundation wells up to 9.50 m depth. In the reflection seismic investigation, hard rocks up to 90 meters were found in the foundation of the Taj Mahal.
The depth of the foundation of Taj Mahal and Mahtab Bagh was found to be 13 meters on the banks of the river. On the rooms below the jasmine floor, walls up to three meters wide were found on the river bank.
It was told in the survey that the bottom part of the original tombs in the main dome is not empty. In shear wave study it gives information about being solid.
Basements should be opened only for study: KK Muhammad
Padma Shri awardee and Superintending Archaeologist of Agra Circle KK Muhammad shared his experiences with Amar Ujala. KK Muhammad, who lives in Kerala, said that the basements of the Taj Mahal have always been open, only for tourists.
ASI is taking good care and protection of them. Taj Mahal is a world heritage. Any dispute will damage it. He has been to the basement several times for conservation works, but he has not seen any religious insignia.
The monuments built on the banks of Yamuna river like Rambagh and Etmaddaula have exactly the same basements on which the monuments are built. Instead of giving religious colours, the basement should be opened only for study. The research scholar should be allowed to go with special permission.
Videography should be done by opening it under the supervision of the court: Prof. Nadeem Rizvi
Professor Nadeem Rizvi of the History Department of Aligarh Muslim University expressed displeasure over the religious color being given to the Taj Mahal and said that the basement and other parts of the Taj Mahal remained open for 300 years.
Many generations have seen it. There is no sign here. The parts of the Taj that were closed were not done for religious reasons, but due to crowding and security reasons in the Taj.
For the protection of the monument and the safety of the tourists, the ASI has closed some parts of the monuments across the country. Pro. Rizvi said that there is no harm in opening the basement of the Taj, but it should be opened under the supervision of the court and videography should be done. After opening the cellar, there is a fear that someone might keep the idol and the dispute may become permanent.
Professor Irfan Habib of Aligarh Muslim University said that there is a conspiracy to give religious color to world heritage like Taj Mahal. I don’t want the dungeons to be opened. Has it a purpose?
The purpose for which this demand is being made is wrong. Anybody will come from somewhere and demand it and there should be orders on it, it is wrong.
Professor Sugam Anand of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University said that there should not be any problem in the survey of the basements of the Taj Mahal. Once the videography is done, the disputes will end. Opening the basement for tourists is not possible according to archeology.
