0 Assam Flood Updates: 2 lakh people in 20 districts affected, rail and road connectivity stalled due to heavy rains

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in 20 districts in Assam. Nearly 2 lakh people have been affected by the floods. Road and rail connectivity has been snapped in many districts due to incessant rains. Due to floods in many areas of the state, life has been affected extensively. There are also reports of heavy destruction.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin said that nearly 2 lakh people in 20 districts of the state have been affected by the floods, cutting off the hill district of Dima Hasao from the rest of the state after landslides triggered by incessant rains. So far, 652 villages out of 46 revenue circles in 20 districts of the state have been affected by the floods.

Five died in Cachar and Dima:

Two deaths were reported in Cachar district due to floods, while three deaths due to landslides were recorded earlier in Dima Hasao. About 1,97,248 people have been affected by the floods, with 78,157 and 51,357 people affected in Hojai and Cachar respectively. Due to incessant rains, many roads, bridges have been damaged in Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Hojai districts.

The Cachar district administration has set up 55 relief camps and 12 distribution centers in which 32,959 flood-affected people have taken shelter. Several other areas have also been submerged in Nagaon district due to rising water level of Kopili river.

Rail tracks washed away due to flood in Dima Hasau:

Due to incessant rains, many roads, bridges have been damaged in Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Hojai districts. At the same time, the railway line was washed away due to floods in Dima Hasau district. Tracks have been submerged at many stations.

Landslides in hilly areas eroded the ground beneath the tracks and caused the tracks to swing in the air. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire and emergency services and local people are carrying out rescue operations in the flood-hit areas.

Embankments broken at 16 places:

In the last 24 hours, embankments have been breached at 16 places in different districts. Roads, bridges and houses have been completed or partially damaged in many areas. Communication channels have also been closed in Dima Hasao. All roads and railways leading to Haflong have been blocked since May 15.

2800 people trapped in two trains were rescued:

The work of evacuating around 2,800 passengers of two trains stranded on the Lumding-Badarpur section in Dima Hasao for the last two days due to landslides and water-logging on the tracks was completed on Monday, the Northeast Frontier Railway in Guwahati said.

18 trains canceled:

New Hoflang railway station was completely submerged and an empty train parked at the station was washed away due to heavy landslides. Around 18 trains have been canceled while 10 have been stopped on the way. The work of restoring rail traffic by repairing the tracks is going on on a war footing.
