China has decided not to host the AFC Asian Cup final stage next year in view of the increase in the cases of Covid-19 in the country. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said on Saturday that China’s football federation has officially informed it that it will not be able to host the continental tournament next year.
“After extensive discussions with the Chinese Football Association (CFA), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has been officially notified by the CFA that it will no longer be able to host the AFC Asian Cup 2023,” the AFC said in a statement.
China was named as the host of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup after the AFC meeting in Paris in June 2019. This 24-team competition was to be played in 10 cities of the country from June 16 to July 16 next year. “The AFC acknowledges the extraordinary circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to the decision of China to relinquish its hosting rights,” the AFC said.
