Thirty allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have signed the Accession Protocol to Sweden and Finland. NATO ambassadors on Tuesday signed the Accession Protocol for Finland and Sweden at NATO Headquarters in the presence of Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Havisto and Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde.
NATO Secretary General calls ‘historic’ moment:
“This is a truly historic moment for Finland, Sweden, NATO and our shared security,” said NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
At the Madrid summit last week, the leaders of NATO allies agreed to invite Finland and Sweden to join the organization following a tripartite memorandum of understanding between Turkey, Finland and Sweden.
NATO door open for European democracies: Stoltenberg
The NATO Secretary-General said that the door to NATO is open to European democracies who are ready and willing to contribute to our shared security. He said that with 32 countries, we will be stronger and our people will be more secure, because we are facing the biggest security crisis in decades.
Accession talks were held at NATO headquarters:
Finland and Sweden concluded accession talks on Monday (July 4) at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Both countries formally reaffirmed their willingness and ability to meet the political, legal and military obligations and commitments of NATO membership.
The talks were held between NATO officials and representatives of Finland and Sweden. The Finnish delegation was led by Foreign Minister Pekka Havisto and Defense Minister Antti Kakkonen, and the Swedish delegation was led by Foreign Minister Ann Linde.
Russia and China Siege:
On the other hand, after the declaration of war by Russia on 24 February, NATO has laid an all-round siege. The eyes of the military organization are now fixed on China. Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand also participated in the NATO meeting held in Madrid last week.
NATO is engaged in efforts to siege China by increasing cooperation with these four countries of the Asia Pacific region. NATO also signed agreements on cooperation on cyber security and maritime security with these four allies.
Experts are assuming that the reason for the leaders of these four countries going to the NATO meeting and the agreement is Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the increasing aggression of China. At the meeting, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stressed that his presence shows leaders have realized that the security of Europe and the Indo-Pacific is “integral”. He said that I feel deeply that East Asia is turning into Ukraine.
