0 FIFA World Cup: Costa Rica qualified for the World Cup by defeating New Zealand

Costa Rica defeated New Zealand 1-0 in the final qualifying play-off late on Tuesday to become the 32nd and final team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar in November this year. Joel Campbell (in the third minute) scored the only goal for Costa Rica. He maintained this lead throughout the match.

However, New Zealand scored in the 39th minute, which was dismissed by War (video referral). Costa Rica joins Group E along with Germany, Spain and Japan. New Zealand ended the match with 10 players. Costa Barbaruz was shown the red card for a foul and was kicked off the field.

With this victory, North American team Costa Rica secured the right to play in the World Cup for the sixth time. Earlier this team has played in FIFA World Cup in 1990, 2002, 2006, 2014 and 2018. New Zealand have failed to qualify for the World Cup after 1982 and 2010.

Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando said after the match that he had an opportunity to score early, which he took advantage of. The players performed brilliantly and maintained this lead till the end. Costa Rica’s team first played in the FIFA World Cup in 1990.
